CIDER
IN NAILSEA
Any true lover of cider is also a fan of the
Wurzels, the legendary heroes of “Scrumpy and Western”
music. And any fan of the Wurzels should need no introduction
to Nailsea. It was the birthplace of the late, great Adge Cutler,
and remains his final resting place. It is also the home of
The Royal Oak, where the Wurzels appeared on numerous occasions,
and also recorded the album “Live at the Royal Oak”.
Older cider fans will also be aware that Hannah
More Zider are not the first cider-makers to set up in Nailsea.
The Coates cider works stood for many years on the site now
occupied by ABB, and indeed for a time was the workplace of
Adge Cutler, and many other cider-heads no doubt.
For those in need of a little more guidance,
Nailsea is situated around 8 miles to the west of Bristol, in
North Somerset. The largest of the towns in the county, with
the exception of Weston-super-Mare, it provides a focal point
to the region, with its Crown Glass shopping and entertainment
complex. It also contains no less than 4 pubs selling real cider,
and visitors should look out for The Blue Flame, The Sawyers
Arms, The Friendship Inn or The Old Barn if ever thirsty for
some apples. Worth a visit too is the Ring O’Bells, which
although it doesn’t stock cider always has a few real
ales on tap, and the best atmosphere of all the town’s
pubs. Those with a taste for danger should wander in on the
Sunday before Christmas, when each year the “Bloody Sunday”
drinking festival occurs, with the pub full from opening til
closing time.
The local
football team, Nailsea United, have been a dominant force in
local football for over 100 years, and their latest achievement
was collecting the Somerset Senior League and Cup double in
2003. The team attracts a large support base both home and away,
the players have to stay off the scrump til after the final
whistle but happily that doesn’t apply to the fans.
