2007 - The Countdown Begins

April 2007

So once again the HMZ crew made it through the trauma of ticket day, and we are pleased to report that we are back to update our website to build up the excitement to Glastonbury 2007.

The electronic coverage of the festival has expanded even further since 2005, and rather than try to compete with professionals we will point you in the direction of the best around.

But we also think we have plenty to offer from our own point of view, and will be bringing you our preview of the 2007 festival, plus some photos and what we can remember of 2005.

The line-up

Already the headline acts have made themselves known through various sources, and it seems the Artic Monkeys, the Killers and the Who will be closing the Pyramid Stage, with performances from Bjork, the Chemical Brothers and the Kaiser Chiefs also likely to figure. Festival favourites Faithless also did not rule themselves out, in an exclusive recent interview with HMZ.

Efestivals' line-ups and rumours page is the best source of who is and might be playing, we recommend keeping an eye on that until the line-up is officially confirmed at the start of June.

The licence

Excellent news came in the last week of March when Mendip District Council approved a 4-year licence for the festival, also allowing an increase in capacity and the physical size of the festival.

The licence had become less of an issue than it was prior to Mean Fiddler’s involvement in the organisation, in particular 2000 when there were real doubts that the festival would be allowed to take place, and then the events of that year which made it even less likely that a licence would have been granted for a festival in 2001, had the organisers decided to apply.

But even so the granting of the 4-year licence gives the festival more stability than it has ever previously enjoyed in its 37 year history, which can only be a good thing.

The site

Little is yet known about the expansion to the site, although an expansion to the west beyond the Other Stage seems most likely. A new “Park Stage” is to be in place, again with the location not yet finalised. Anyone who missed the 2005 event will also have missed the birth of the new Dance Village, a collection of smaller dance tents and stages where the old large Dance Tent used to stand.

The BBC already have in place their webcam to allow fans to watch the construction of the festival. This year there are in fact 3 different cameras, providing a more panoramic view from the farmhouse end of the site. The "Left" view actually points right at the spot where the cider bus will appear in little over 2 months time. Today has proved to be quite a significant day as the construction of the fence first came into view below the farmhouse. With over 2 months still to go until the gates swing open, the main highlights are likely to be the completion of the super fence and the re-building of the Pyramid stage, which was dismantled after 2005. The final couple of weeks prove the most exciting in the build up as tents, stalls and stages appear, and anyone not arriving til the Thursday or Friday faces the agony of watching the festival get into gear already.

The HMZ Campsite

We will again be occupying our traditional spot towards the top of Wicket Ground. Following previous failed attempts another gazebo is unlikely, but we will no doubt be making a flag to mark our presence. Also in the current plan is the building of a small wickerman which we will burn on the final night in celebration of 10 years of us going to Glastonbury, more on this to follow. We would certainly like to hear from anyone with previous experience of building wickermen.

As ever anyone who wants to enjoy some cider and fire by the dogging tent is more than welcome to join us.

Fire Album 3

Tracks for the third edition of the fire album are currently under consideration, please post any suggestions on our forum discussion, or email them to us.

The Weather

Way to early to say for certainty that it will be hot and sunny all week, but surely the law of averages suggests we are in for a dry one. The BBC monthly outlook is still too far away, but this weather watch site is set up to give a humorous take on the latest forecasts and the likelihood of another bumper welly sale for Joe Bananas.

Videos

Youtube has become awash with Glastonbury footage, but the best is this short 4 part film by Benjamin tv.

For the more official footage we recommend getting last year’s Julian Temple film Glastonbury on DVD (review here) and Glastonbury Anthems, which is 20 of the best performances from the festival’s recent history.
