Portishead Colts 0 - Nailsea United Colts 1 - Saturday 3rd November 2007

United Scorer: Collins

Nailsea went to local Welsh rivals Portishead looking to get back to winning ways following last weeks disappointing defeats to Wrington & Redhill. On arrival in Cymru apart from sheep grazing close to the pitch, it was noticeable that the average age of Portishead’s future was at least double that of Nailsea…….........

Nailsea youthful pace against the home sides back four in the form of Collins, Ling and Brady was almost immediately obvious and, it was Collins who latched on to a long ball from the impressive full back Summerell and he was just foiled by the advancing home custodian.

Nailsea were dominating the early proceedings and it was Ling who broke free next only to under power his effort. A neat move and a speculative ball over the top was spilled by the home goalkeeper and the in-form Collins made no mistake rounding him before coolly rolling the ball into the empty onion bag.

It was then very apparent that pace was not at the heart of the Portishead defence, when Gascoigne picked up the ball in his own half and out ran two defenders, only to see his effort magnificently saved.

Nailsea hesitation just before the break almost cost them dearly with the ball being cleared off the line, video technology in a Rugby world cup style, may have seen a different out-come.

Nil – One, half time.

The second half saw Portishead applying more pressure that was soaked up by the solid back four of Price, Tanner, Summerell and the out-standing veteran Savage, who all afternoon was simply holding back the tears and rolling back the football years.

Nailsea still looked more composed on the ball and two efforts from crossbar Cogan could have put the game to bed. Portishead made a couple of changes and this slightly changed the game as it entered its final stage, however with captain Johnson tough tackling and quality distribution in the middle of the park enables Nailsea to always look dangerous going forward.

The lead was in safe hands with the classy Sampson in the away goal and the introduction of Jenkins added more pace up front, enabling Nailsea to play outlet balls into the corners to secure the deserved result.

A very respectable away victory against a considerably more experienced Portishead side. With just a little more composure during times of pressure and Nailsea will have the makings of a top 3 side.

Man of the Match: Marcus Tanner – Won every header and tackle in addition to marking a player that has scored countless goals for Portishead first team completely out the game……….
