ENGLAND 1 AUSTRIA 0 (8th October 2005) & ENGLAND 2 POLAND 1 FIFA World Cup Group 6

Old Trafford, Manchester

Two trips to Manchester in 5 days for the England followers. The Saturday was pretty straightforward, but the Wednesday traffic made that trip a nightmare, and we eventually had to stop at Altrincham and get the tram in, despite having left ourselves 6 hours to navigate the M6. The famous NUFC flag has been temporarily misplaced, not that there's many landmarks in Manchester to photograph it with, but hopefully it will be found or replaced in time for the Argentina game.

Saturday was a nervy affair, particularly after Beckham's sending off, but England hung on to Lampard's penalty to get the vital 3 points. A more fluent performance against Poland secured group victory, although the main story for the press was the booing of Peter Crouch, more for the substitution of Wright-Phillips than anything against the beanpole from where we were sat. There was no mistaking the cause of the deafening boos of G4 at half-time, they were awful!
